In 1983, Sten Nadolny wrote the novel “The Discovery of Slowness” and about the power and influence that the polar explorer John Franklin discovered for himself in the author’s fiction. In the Arctic landscape a sailing ship, motionless. On the left, snails, one painted, another as a shell abraded in the surf and finally in the form of an ammonite in Gault Clay from the English south coast.
